More than 8 million people have now been displaced inside Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion, according to the UN‘s International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In addition, some 5.9 million people had fled abroad, the UN‘s refugee agency UNHCR said in its latest figures. Before the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine had about 44 million inhabitants.
According to the IOM, however, more than 2.7 million people have also returned to their homes.
“The needs of those internally displaced and all affected by the war in Ukraine are growing by the hour,” said IOM director general António Vitorino.
“Access to populations in need of aid remains a challenge amid active hostilities, but our teams are committed to continue delivering urgent assistance inside Ukraine and in neighbouring countries.”
