We are leaving behind the year that will be remembered by the global pandemic that has entirely changed our way of life and our worldview. We will remember this year as the year of the biggest global crisis in the new century. We have seen many heroes emerge during this adversity, demonstrating solidarity, humanity and the importance of helping each other, says Prime Minister Zoran Zaev in the New Year’s address.
“The Government has responded with timely and comprehensive measures both in the health and economic sectors, taking into consideration the people’s health and social security, while maintaining people’s jobs and sustaining the pace of the economy,” says PM Zaev.
He highlights the enormous sacrifice of the health workers, who are working daily to save lives.
“The crisis management would have been impossible without the engagement of the Army, police, media workers and other stakeholders on the frontlines. We salute all of you!,” says Zaev.
At the same time, I extend my condolences for every lost life, and let the unity in this struggle give strength to the families that have lost loved ones in finding peace.
“2021 will be a year of vaccination and the way out of the pandemic. The vaccines are an opportunity to protect lives and return to our normal way of life,” says Zaev.
We are also fighting, he adds, one of the most dangerous phenomena of our time – disinformation and fake news, which aim is to sow mistrust among people and devalue the efforts of institutions in the fight against the pandemic.
“Therefore, I call on all citizens and democratic forces in the country – let’s focus our efforts on the truth, so that lies sink into darkness and oblivion,” notes Zaev.
The PM says 2020 saw North Macedonia realize its strategic objective of joining the most powerful military-political alliance in the world – NATO.
“Now we look to the European Union. Our membership in the Union has no alternative. Nothing will stop us from moving forward, because Macedonians do have a say in their Macedonian language, on equal footing with other European nations. We are continuing to build friendship and mutual trust with all neighbors on this path. All together – Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Roma, Serbs, Vlachs, Bosniaks and others living in North Macedonia,” says Zaev.
He says ten priorities have been set up for the year ahead, part of “Action 21” – justice, fight against corruption and crime, quality healthcare, higher living standard, stable business environment and high-paid jobs, dignified welfare, healthy environment.
“Europe at home! European standards at home! All in action,” says Zaev and wishes that 2021 brings hope and certainty.
He urges citizens to celebrate the New Year and Christmas holidays responsibly, with their families.
“We need to take care of our loved ones, whose health and safety is part of the daily struggle. Let’s demonstrate responsibility and adhere to the recommendations. Happy New Year!”, underlines PM Zaev.
