During his second day visit to Athens, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev accompanied by Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Fatmir Bytyqi held a meeting Friday with the US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt.
During the talks, Ambassador Pyatt and PM Zaev reaffirmed the benefits of the Prespa Agreement and strongly supported regional economic and energy initiatives.
According to the government’s press release, Ambassador Pyatt congratulated PM Zaev on the impressive achievements over the past period, emphasizing that the Prespa Agreement is the most positive surprise in his five-year term as US Ambassador to Greece.
It was also underlined that the importance and value of the Prespa Agreement is even greater given that the new Greek government and Prime Minister Mitsotakis have supported and strengthened the friendship and alliance between the two countries.
Ambassador Pyatt and PM Zaev expressed their satisfaction that today Greece is not only not an obstacle to progress, but strongly and proactively supports North Macedonia’s EU path.
PM Zaev thanked for the US overall continued support to North Macedonia and especially for the support in concluding the Prespa Agreement, whereas they also discussed the economic opportunities under the Prespa Agreement, reads the press release.
“PM Zaev and Ambassador Pyatt reaffirmed their support for the economic chambers to strengthen cooperation and develop regional economic projects, especially in the field of green agenda, energy and renewable energy sources. The US Ambassador welcomed North Macedonia’s efforts in replacing coal used for power generation with renewable energy sources,” the press release said.
They also shared views on the importance of NATO membership and opportunities in promoting regional stability and security, referring to the air policing mission by neighbouring countries for keeping North Macedonia sky safe as well as the development of Krivolak in a regional NATO training center.
PM Zaev and Ambassador Pyatt expressed satisfaction with the development of the regional energy project Alexandroupolis, which opens the possibility for safe and secure supply of natural gas from various suppliers, diversification of sources and a way for North Macedonia and the region to become energy independent, government said in a press release.
