Simultaneous spread of delta strain and coronavirus omicron strain creates “case tsunami”, he stressed at a press conference today Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adanom Gebrejesus.
“I’m very concerned that omicron, which is easily transmitted and spreads at the same time as the delta, leads to a tsunami of cases,” he said, adding that it was a double threat that led to a sharp rise in hospitalizations and deaths.
Tedros reiterated his call for countries to distribute doses of coronavirus vaccines more equitably and warned that the emphasis on boosting doses in richer countries could lead to a shortage of vaccines in poorer countries.
He said the WHO was committed to ensuring that each country reached a 70 per cent vaccination rate by mid-2022, which would help end the critical phase of the pandemic.
