The principle of equality and non-discrimination is implemented in all areas of social life such as social protection, health, education, labor relations and the judiciary in the Republic of North Macedonia. Promoting human rights and freedoms is government’s top priority, Minister of Labour and Social Policy Jagoda Shahpaska said addressing virtual conference hosted by Equal Rights Coalition (ERC).
The Republic of North Macedonia which is a member of ERC, has recently adopted two laws aimed at creating policies and undertaking activities in addressing the issue of discrimination, Minister Shahpaska underlined.
“Last October, we adopted the Law on Prevention and Protection against Discrimination, which for the first time defines sexual orientation and gender identity as grounds for discrimination. Moreover, a National Coordination Body for Non-Discrimination and Equality was established, in order to promote the concept of non-discrimination and equal opportunities and to monitor the situation in this field in all spheres of social life,” Shahpaska said.
The Pride Parade was held for the second time in the country, supported by the government institutions and civil society. All this contributed to the Republic of North Macedonia to advance 12 spots higher than last year on the Rainbow map rankings in terms of eliminating discrimination against LGBT people in our country.
“We are building a society based on equality, freedom and justice. Our goal is for everyone to feel free in choosing their orientation, profession, realization of their vision. A society that will integrate and will not discriminate. We are building a society free from prejudices,” Minister Shahpaska noted.
Virtual ERC conference brings together Member States, civil society and other stakeholders to launch the ERC 5-year Strategy.
