European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has spoken in favor of Ukraine joining the European Union. “Indeed over time they belong to us. They are one of us and we want them in,” von der Leyen told an Euronews reporter when asked about Kyiv joining the bloc on Sunday, MIA informs.
She also emphasized that there are already several areas of cooperation between the bloc and the country. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed for a decision on the matter.
“It is a crucial moment to close the long-standing discussion once and for all and decide on Ukraine’s membership in the #EU,” Zelensky said in a tweet. “Discussed with [European Council President Charles Michel] further effective assistance and the heroic struggle of Ukrainians for their free future.”
