The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday said that 5 million people have left Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion of their country, reports news agency MIA.
Speaking from Hungary, where almost half a million Ukrainians have sought safety, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Kelly Clements on Tuesday urged the Security Council to “put aside” its divisions and find a way to end the “horrific and senseless war.”
“Each one of the millions displaced are forced to make impossible, heart-breaking decisions,” Clements told the UN Security Council. Another 7 million people are displaced internally within Ukraine, António Vitorino of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) explained.
At the meeting, member states discussed the need for more support for refugees and an end to the war. It was the sixth meeting of the Council on the Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine nearly two months ago on February 24.
Ukraine’s UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya criticized the fact that the Security Council continues to treat Russia as a fully fledged member.
“Colleagues, it seems to me that these meetings will not change much,” he asserted.
