Ukraine is counting on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to mediate in the rescue of trapped Ukrainian civilians inside the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, writes MIA.
Guterres is being asked to become “the initiator and guarantor of a humanitarian corridor,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said, adding that she hoped the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to oversee the operation.
Vereshchuk denied that a safe corridor from the steel plant had already been agreed with the Russians.
“A corridor that is only declared unilaterally does not provide security,” she wrote in her Telegram channel.
