The consequences of global warming are not stories of the future anymore
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Global warming is causing climate changes, that is, gradual warming of our planet. All this causes a change in rain patterns, a decreased snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere, a change in the level of the seas and oceans, and a strong influence on the people and animals on Earth.

When referring to climate changes, it is most often perceived as global warming caused by the greenhouse effect. The glass walls of the greenhouse allow the heat to pass through, but do not let it go out, and it becomes very warm inside and plants can grow even in places where it is usually too cold for them.

There is a scientific consensus that there are climate changes and that the activities of humans are the basic regulator. Forecasts for future climate changes at the regional level are not as reliable as those performed at the global level. However, it is expected that future warming will develop according to the previously displayed geographical pattern, with the greatest warming above the Earth and at the northern high latitudes, and the least over the South Ocean and parts of the northern Atlantic Ocean. It is very likely that almost all land surfaces will heat up more than the global average. The Arctic, Africa, small islands and the Asian Mega-deltas are regions that will most probably be most affected by climate changes.

The report published in Nature, presented results that are devastating for the planet, and show that Antarctica has lost 3 trillion tons of ice in the past 25 years.

Most of this large quantity has disappeared in the most vulnerable region of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet, and has so far contributed to 6 millimeters of sea level rise, but in the long run the loss of ice in this region can increase the level of seas and oceans by a stunning 3 meters over the next centuries.

No one is spared from the changes of global warming, and thus, two days ago snow fell in Slovenia, at Kredarica, the peak of the Julian Alps, although according to the calendar it is the start of summer.

The local media from Slovenia stated that during the night a snow cover of about five centimeters had been created, but expect stabilization of the weather. This is not the first case in Slovenia for snow to fall in the spring and summer months.

And the rest of the Balkans have also not been spared from sudden weather changes. Rain, strong winds and floods have swept Greece, where streets and beaches are flooded in several resorts.

There were also floods in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, where there was heavy rainfall followed by thunderstorms, while some streets were entirely under water and in some parts of Belgrade there was also hail.

Contrary to the Balkans, Great Britain was hit by a heat wave, where unusually high air temperatures were recorded, whereas in northern England fires were also recorded.

The highest ever temperature in Great Britain for June has been 35.6 degrees, and it has been recorded in the Southampton Port in 1976.

Each one of us can contribute to slowing the process of global warming and pollution on planet Earth. In average, a person throws away 2 kilograms of waste a day, and this remains in landfills for 30 years. One bus does as much harm to the environment as 40 automobiles do. One family throws away in average 44 kilograms of plastic per year, recycled paper saves 64% more energy than newly produced one, and 1 ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees.

If we throw litter outside, we need to have in consideration that it takes 500 years for plastic to decompose in our environment, also 500 years for aluminum cans, and 6 months for organic materials, cotton and paper.
