Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said Tuesday the inclusion of ethnicity in the IDs should be supported because North Macedonia is a multiethnic country.
“You know, this is like wanting to make love to your partner but without hugging. We need to support this because we are a multiethnic state. I am aware of the debate and opinions that this could cause certain discrimination etc. No one has ever been ashamed of their identity, but on the contrary, we have always been proud of it. As a multiethnic society we are proud of our ethnic diversity, this richness of cultural, ethnical and religious diversities, a model of coexistence that many more developed countries can learn from,” said PM Zaev.
Regarding VMRO-DPMNE’s demand for the exclusion of adjective “North” from the IDs, since the timeline for its implementation arising from the Prespa Agreement has still not expired, the PM said the Constitution names the country as the Republic of North Macedonia.
“I urge everyone not to look for excuses, because when filing a draft-law, it is not only the Prespa Agreement that should be considered but also the Constitution,” said Zaev.
