Police Day is a symbol of the sacrifice, responsibility, courage, morality – traits that every individual who takes an oath of honor by the blue uniform needs to develop, Minister of Interior Oliver Spasovski said in a video address to police officers and MoI officials on May 7 – Police Day.
Sacrifice, Spasovski says in the greeting, because police officers are obliged to put the safety and the well-being of others before their own, because they should always be on the frontlines for a better, safer and more secure life of all citizens of North Macedonia, to protect public peace and order, and state-building.
“Especially during this past year, the situation was further complicated due to the pandemic that the world faced, so the duty to protect the health, life and property of our citizens has become an immutable decree for police officers,” Spasovski says.
Responsibility, he continues, because non-selective fight against crime and corruption and uncompromising rule of law is in our hands.
“Our common goal is zero tolerance for corruption, zero tolerance for anyone who breaks the law, no exceptions! I firmly believe our goal is within reach by establishing the concept of partnership between citizens and the police,” Spasovski points out on Police Day.
And when it comes to courage, says Spasovski, ever since you put on this uniform, from day one, and the first risky situations you faced, you were well aware that you can’t do anything without this virtue, just as you’re aware that courage, in addition to honesty, is the mind’s greatest quality.
“On this special day, we remember our brave colleagues, the fallen police officers – their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. What they left behind as legacy, and the memory of them, are an inspiration for every citizen, for our young police officers who’ll put on the uniform for the first time, an inspiration for the future of our country – for our children,” notes Spasovski.
And finally, Spasovski underlines – morality, because to be a police officer is to perform a highly moral profession.
The efficiency of your work, he points out, is measured through concrete results such as the fight against crime and, to a great extent, the citizens’ respect and trust, as well as the overall situation in the country.
“When it comes to the fight against crime, I can proudly say that in almost all segments there’s an obvious improvement in results, and a general reduction in crime is evident. Thus, in the period January 1 – April 15, 2021, crime decreased by 9.5% compared to the same period last year,” Spasovski noted, adding that such results increase citizens’ trust and build the image of the police.
It is a great pleasure, he says, to have managed in these recent years to re-establish the tradition of respect for each such individual who contributes to building our democratic society with European standards in the police, and the Ministry of Interior as a strong institution that guarantees the order, security, and the rule of law.
“I am aware that only efficient, strong and satisfied police, working at full capacity and legitimacy, deliver results in activities to fight crime. That’s why I’m committed to the overall improvement of the professional working conditions and raising the social status of police officers,” says Spasovski.
We continue, he points out, guided by strong motivation to build the overall capacities of our institution, in order to achieve even better results, for the benefit of all citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia.
“I’d like to sincerely congratulate you once again, dear colleagues, on Police Day. To all employees of the Ministry of Interior, I wish health, success, prosperity and even better results in your important work. Long live the Macedonian police! Long live the Republic of North Macedonia!,” Spasovski says in the video address on Police Day.
