Stefano Sotgiu (d. December 2025) was a prominent Italian public economist, academic, and civic activist, widely recognized as a leading authority on participatory and deliberative democracy. With more than two decades of experience in public policy and democratic innovation, he was the founder and president of Prossima Democrazia, a driving force behind citizens’ assemblies and democratic reform initiatives in Italy and beyond. As Coordinator for Democratic Innovation at EUMANS and an active contributor to European civic processes, including the Conference on the Future of Europe, and the New European People’s Forum, Sotgiu combined academic insight with practical engagement, advocating for more inclusive, citizen-centered governance across the continent.
The New European People’s Forum (NEPF) pays tribute to Stefano Sotgiu, a respected public economist, civic leader, and member of its Board, whose work and vision helped shape participatory democracy efforts across Europe.
“We remember Stefano Sotgiu, our friend and colleague on the Board of the New European People’s Forum, with deep respect and gratitude. Stefano was a committed public economist and one of Italy’s most respected voices for participatory and deliberative democracy, whose work consistently sought to bring citizens closer to decision-making and public life,” said Dr. Wolfgang Ressmann, President of NEPF, speaking on behalf of the organization.
The NEPF Board paid tribute to their late colleague with a minute of silence and held a commemorative meeting last week.
“We honor him not only for his profound contributions to democratic innovation, but also for his warmth, integrity, and quiet determination. His absence is deeply felt, and his legacy continues to inspire our work,” said Roger Casale, one of the founders of NEPF and a member of the Board.
Through his leadership of Prossima Democrazia and his engagement in European civic initiatives, Stefano shared his clarity of thought, discipline, and generosity of spirit with the world, guided by a deep belief in the idea of true democracy. His actions were always grounded in the conviction that democracy must be lived, practiced, and shared, the joint statement of the NEPF Board members reads.
