Portugal welcomes and admires the efforts at dialogue between Bulgaria and North Macedonia. We support the concrete steps in support of dialogue, making a fuss does not help, it gets in the way, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said Wednesday in Sofia.
There are several European countries that have different positions regarding the EU enlargement issue, de Sousa, whose country holds the EU’s rotating presidency, told a news conference.
Portugal, he stated, has a principled position – the country supports EU enlargement and we don’t want any prejudice on the matter.
As regards the Western Balkans, de Sousa said, we know the history and the geography, we are aware that the issues are sensitive, not only for EU member countries, but also for the countries striving to join.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, he said it is vital to open paths to bridge the differences.
“Portugal’s position is in favor of constant dialogue, understanding, understanding of the issues of the other, without prejudice or any complex about the EU’s enlargement,” President de Sousa stated.
