President Stevo Pendarovski does not think that the country has entered the Bulgarian scenario. Political developments, he said, are still taking place within the Parliament, through procedure, and that is good. It will be bad, he says, if they spill on the street.
As Pendarovski said in tonight’s guest appearance on Sitel TV, the biggest misconception is that in such a case he should convene a leadership meeting.
The head of state remains of the opinion that the resignation submitted by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev is a hasty decision, but that, he stressed, is already a done deal.
– So far we have not entered and I do not believe that we will enter the Bulgarian scenario because it means that none of the parties can make a majority and we must go to early elections. I think that the delay is only because Zaev’s announcement is that he would like to elect the party leader first and then he will be the prime minister-designate of the new government, said Pendarovski.
He is adamant that he had no dilemmas, nor any hesitations as to whom to give the mandate to when the vote of confidence in the Government was to be passed in Parliament and when there was a “race” over the majority.
– I was clear about what I would do in relation to the majority. First, a vote of no confidence is taken in the Government, and then you elect a new one with a majority of 61 MPs. If they overthrew the Government with 61 MPs, it would be legitimate to give the mandate to the second largest parliamentary group, VMRO-DPMNE. If that majority remained and when the new government was to be elected, only a phone call from the opposition leader would be enough and here the Constitution leaves no room, the mandate of those who have the majority must be given, explained the head of state.
Regarding the dispute with Bulgaria, Pendarovski said that we should concentrate on those who will eventually form a new government. Radev, reminded Pendarovski, is currently the only functional institution and such a situation in Bulgaria may exist until December 14.
– We can talk about what they think. What do we want to talk about Samuel, if the criterion is the EU ?, said Pendarovski.
