On the occasion of marking World Down Syndrome Day, President Pendarovski sent the following message:
“World Down Syndrome Day, the 21st day of the third month, as a symbol for the three copies of the 21st chromosome that people with Down Syndrome carry, is just one of the many occasions that remind us of what we have done for people who live with this condition and what are the future steps that we need to take for providing their equal and quality life.
I am convinced that with continuous public awareness raising and strengthening inclusive services, we can ensure our fellow citizens with Down Syndrome to have a fulfilled life, based on equality and non-discrimination.
Let’s leave the stereotypes behind, let’s focus on the functionality and development of skills of people with Down Syndrome, with the purpose to give them space in our common society.
With the purpose of unhindered integration of people with Down Syndrome into the overall society, we need planned and coordinated implementation of activities of all stakeholders: state institutions, health institutes, educational institutions, social centers and civil society organizations.
I express unreserved support to all parents and families of persons with Down Syndrome, and gratitude to all institutions and individuals involved in their educational process, medical care and social protection.
Our attitude towards disabled people is another test of the declarative efforts for building an inclusive society in which human freedoms and rights are equally enjoyed.
