There is a strange atmosphere in Kyiv tonight.
The lull has lasted for almost two days. It should bring relief. But no one here is that naïve. Tonight, the silence descended almost two hours before curfew. It offers no reassurance. There is something heavy in the air, a sense of anticipation that no one voices aloud.
The squares, streets and bars emptied a little earlier than they did the previous evening. I do not know whether people sense that another massive attack is being prepared, or whether they simply understand the logic of this war all too well. A long lull usually does not mean that the danger has passed. Quite the opposite.
Kyiv is quiet tonight. But it also seems awake.
People have withdrawn into their homes. Without panic, but also without illusions.
Tonight, the silence feels like waiting. I am leaving my shoes beside the bed.
Good night, Kyiv. I hope I am overreacting.
