A number of NATO countries have decided to send more ships and aircraft to Eastern Europe in recent days, the military alliance said in a statement.
“The United States has also made clear that it is considering increasing its military presence in the eastern part of the alliance,” the statement said.
In a round-up of recently announced contributions, NATO said Denmark would deploy a frigate to the Baltic Sea and send four fighter jets to Lithuania; Spain would contribute ships for NATO naval forces; France was ready to send troops to Romania; and the Netherlands would send two fighter aircraft to Bulgaria from April.
“NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to protect and defend all allies, including by reinforcing the eastern part of the alliance,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, amid fears Russia could be planning an invasion of Ukraine. “We will always respond to any deterioration of our security environment,” Stoltenberg added.
