When I say patriotism, I mean the house where I was born and the streets where I grew up. I mean neighbors and friends and relatives. The smell of childhood and the first touch with nature. Patriotism is pride in everything that is beautiful in my environment and awareness of the diversity of people, values, religions, languages, tastes, all gathered in one place which is the place of birth and first contact with the community.
When I say nationalism, I mean proving and denying, enemies, conquest and enslavement. I mean traitors and spies, conspiracies and secret intentions. When I say nationalism, I mean homogeneity and sameness and distrust and fear of the different. I mean loyalty without thinking, respect without question, sacrifice without examination.
I think and speak patriotism. As for you, it is up to you to choose.
