We are becoming increasingly more insensitive and not speaking enough about gender-based and domestic violence, says Stojna Miteva from Sky Plus Strumica, at CIVIL’s panel “Gender Equality in North Macedonia: Between Declarations and Reality”.
“Statements of women victims who have decided to report change in the second hearing already. A few days ago, I attended a discussion of high school students on sexual harassment, where results were presented of a survey conducted among high school students, and I was astounded by the number of just how many children have mixed up the terms, but it’s not their fault, it’s the fault of professors, our fault, because we do not inform the youth enough. According to the survey, slapping girls on the behind is a normal occurrence, as well as sexism. As a society, we need to work much more to sensibilitize and for the institutions to be a bit more aware”, says Miteva.
She stressed that we should not be silent to gender-based violence, because it’s not a private matter, but a social problem.
The panel is part of the project “European Perspectives” that CIVIL is implementing with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.
