At the end of 2018, Chechen authorities began to abduct members of LGBTI+ community, bringing them to a Government facility. As we were ringing in the New Year with our friends and family, they were being tortured as part of a “preventive mopping up” of people deemed undesirable.
At least two people have died as a result of the torture. Around 40 others still being held in detention. Their lives are in jeopardy, we have to act fast.
There is an ongoing petition demanding from Russia to take immediate action to protect gay and lesbian people living in Chechnya.
CIVIL – Center for Freedom strongly condemns the crackdown and violent assault on LGBTI+ communities in Chechnya, in Russia and elsewhere in the world.
