Maljas: Some EU countries are also responsible for the situation in Northern Macedonia

“There is responsibility with specific countries in the European Union,” said former Greek Ambassador to Skopje Alexandros Mallias for Greek Sky television, analyzing developments in our country and explaining that the current situation is due to the failure of some EU countries to give the green light. for accession talks, said the MIA correspondent from Athens.

– We are in a phase, which I would say was predictable, after the failure of some EU member states to “give the green light” for accession negotiations, which were one of the very strong motives for signing the Prespa Agreement and of course for ratification by The Assembly in Skopje. “Let me say that there is a responsibility of specific countries in the European Union,” Maljas said.

Regarding the no-confidence vote in the government on Thursday, the experienced ambassador explained that he was not in a position to predict the outcome and “how the MPs from the Albanian parties will vote”.

– But what I can say with a great deal of certainty, because I was ambassador in Skopje, is that all Albanian parties as a condition for cooperation with VMRO and Ahmeti’s DUI, will set the non-termination of the Prespa Agreement. Implementation will be problematic, Maljas told Sky.

Regarding the Prespa Agreement, he explained that there are two features, one is that it is valid forever, ie indefinitely and the second is that no one can terminate it.

Answering the question what will happen if the new government is from VMRO-DPMNE and as soon as it can not terminate the agreement, simply not respect it, Maljas explained that “the therapy for breach of contract is very incomplete” and there are three levels that would follow .

– What does the Prespa Agreement say? First, Athens informs the other side that in our opinion, it is violating the agreement and the other side will have to respond. The second level is the UN Secretary General, who I guess, with great difficulty would like to personally begin to get involved in an issue that he thinks is over. And the third is a lawsuit to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, either jointly or if Northern Macedonia does not want to agree, we can address ourselves after six months. This is provided for in the agreement. Justice for Greece in The Hague will take many years, Malias explained.
