Ex-policeman Igor Spasov, who was accused of murdering a young man in 2011, was arrested on Monday in Sofia by Bulgarian police acting on an international arrest warrant, MIA’s Sofia correspondent reports.
Spasov, who had entered Bulgaria via Turkey some time ago, was arrested on domestic violence charges, police sources confirmed to the Bulgarian National Radio.
He was sought by Interpol.
Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry confirmed to MIA’s correspondent that Spasov had been taken to custody on Monday night, but fell short of providing any further details.
“Igor Spasov was arrested yesterday in the capital in the Mladost settlement, where he had been hiding. According to media reports, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Republic of North Macedonia for murder. Spasov had been living in Sofia in the Mladost settlement. Police got a tip off that he had been hiding there,” the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) says in a report posted on its website.
He didn’t resist arrest, according to the BNR.
Police spokesman Toni Angelovski told MIA late on Monday that Igor Spasov had been arrested by Bulgarian police after an international arrest warrant had been issued against him.
A court in Skopje sentenced Spasov to 14 years in prison for the murder of Martin Neshkoski in downtown Skopje as VMRO-DPMNE was celebrating its election win in 2011.
The Interior Ministry had issued an international warrant for Spasov for his arrest in late October 2019 after not returning to prison upon completing his medical treatment.
