Following an evaluation of 241 electoral processes carried out in 158 countries in the period 2012-2016, the elections held in Macedonia during this period have positioned the country at the 110th place! According to the index assessing the integrity of the elections conducted in Macedonia, on a scale from very high integrity (70+) to very low (below 40), Macedonia (48) is assessed as a country – with low integrity.
The analysis “Electoral Integrity Project” was carried out by the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney, Australia, and was published in May 2017.
The evaluations are made based on various aspects that are related to the electoral process: Electoral laws, Electoral procedures, Electoral units, Voters register, Party register, Media coverage, Campaign finance, voting process, Vote counting, Results and Election Commission…The electoral process in Macedonia is evaluated the worst in terms of the Voters Register, media coverage and the financing of the election campaign.
On the list of 158 countries, highest ranked countries with a very high electoral integrity are: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Costa Rica, Germany, Estonia, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Lowest ranked countries are: Ethiopia, Burundi, Syria, Equatorial Guinea, Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Chad, Haiti, Afghanistan and Cambodia.
In the region, Macedonia is ranked the worst!
Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Greece have a higher index of electoral integrity, while the best ranked country in the Western Balkans is – Slovenia.
The analysis on “Does populism threaten electoral integrity” also refers to the elections carried out in 2016/17 and on the ones that will be held this year in the US, Germany, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands.
