The Macedonian non-governmental organization CIVIL – Center for Freedom (North Macedonia) and MEDIA DIALOGUE / Youth4Media from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are organizing an international conference on December 11–12, 2024, titled “Defending Democracy and Human Rights in Times of War, Nationalism, and Authoritarianism” in NRW’s partner state, North Macedonia, as announced on the official website of the government of North Rhine-Westphalia.

“The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) supports this significant international conference. The event is part of NRW’s Human Rights Week, which includes various formats on this topic. North Macedonia and North Rhine-Westphalia have been connected as partner states since 2021,” the official statement further highlights.

The NRW government’s website reveals several details about the conference in Skopje to its German audience.

“The conference will bring together leading experts, policymakers, civil society representatives, and journalists from various European countries and the United States to address current threats to democracy and human rights worldwide. As the free world faces new and escalating challenges to core democratic values, standards, and practices – from conflict escalation and the rise of nationalism to the emergence of authoritarian regimes – this conference will serve as an important platform for sharing insights and providing recommendations,” states the announcement published on the official NRW government website.

Furthermore, the announcement emphasizes that the focus of this major international event in Skopje is on protecting human rights, fostering democratic resilience, and safeguarding media freedom. The two-day event includes panel discussions, workshops, and networking formats.

The announcement also promotes the opportunity for interested individuals to follow the event online, with a live-stream link available on the official conference website: https://defendingdemocracy.civilmedia.mk/.

The announcement also reveals that NRW’s Minister for Europe, Liminski, will open the main day of the event on December 12 with a video address.
