When people, in enormous numbers, divide themselves along the lines as to who believes in science and who doesn’t, then there is no hope for that society. And when the tendency to believe in lies, as opposed to obvious facts, becomes massive, the question – what the hell is happening to society – becomes rhetorical.
The question no longer is what is happening in, but to society. The preposition “in” changes to “to” depending on the scale of the situation. When something happens to individuals or a group, it’ said that something is happening in society. But when a large part of that society is affected by a situation, then something is happening to society. (Did this really have to be explained? Given the conditions, it seems that – yes)
Drastic changes in behavior, diminished ability to remember, to think and to make independent decisions, are symptoms of dementia. Is that what is happening to society? Has it fallen into a state of dementia?
Rejecting facts, common sense and logic are not a matter of faith or religious freedoms – a person to believe in what one wants. Not accepting logic and facts doesn’t mean that some right or freedom is being exercised. It has nothing to do with human rights and freedoms. It could simply mean that 1) someone is so stupid that they cannot understand, 2) has some other goal, wants to hide or get something out of rejecting the obvious facts, 3) she or he is a victim of manipulation of political or religious propaganda.
Or, to make the long story short, it’s time to admit that the propaganda was and still is the strongest weapon in the hands of man. Both throughout history and in the present, a state of dementia (or mass psychosis) in society has been known. Fascism, Stalinism, Nazism… If we accept that they also existed and have passed (indeed, leaving enormous devastation and suffering behind), perhaps there is a speck of hope left here.
Or perhaps not. Never before has knowledge been so accessible, and such ignorance ruled. Never before was there a need to launch entire campaigns in order to prove that the planet is not flat, that there are no chips in vaccines, that science is not a manipulation… Never before has there been so much vulgarity in defense of “honor”.
Still, there has always been so much hatred in defense of “love” for the nation, there has always been so much hatred towards the “impure”, “unfaithful” and “different”.
It is debatable whether there is a moment of a mindful decision on that (mental) path towards complete abandoning of free will and accepting ignorance. What is needed for one to give up facts and accept the “dogmas” of propaganda? Or even more horrifying, to leave the control of one’s own thoughts in the hands of others. To replace universal human values with hatred and destruction.
Lastly, a (not so) naïve question: Is humanity tired of itself?
Who would have thought that society would fail in such an absurd way. Anti-utopia is knocking on the door. The “new” man, unconscious, opens the door.
