VMRO-DPMNE defines the latest idea for a referendum as a “people’s declaration in regards to the harmful parts that include full assimilation, change of history and Bulgarianization of Macedonia”. There’s not much to comment on this formulation since it’s nonsense. Surely, regardless of how nonsense it is, it doesn’t mean that it’s naïve. Once again, like in the previous decades, VMRO-DPMNE is impeding the Macedonian progress and the fulfillment of national strategic goals.
The vmros blew it with the announcement of “broad consultations on the referendum that is to follow, as well on the formulation of the referendum question, according to which they expect it to be carried out”. They blew it, yes, like always.
Hello! How about some contact with reality!
The broad consultations passed, and then we stepped on the highway to the EU, with the voting in Parliament on July 16, and immediately after that was the first Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels, on July 19.
So, to a certain extent it’s also becoming ridiculous. To put it plainly, Vmro so very often doesn’t speak the truth and so wrongly understands and interprets events, processes, democracy, that it’s becoming ridiculous for one to deny them. One would think that apart from the sick appetite for power, there is also something deeply wrong with the people who lead the party. It differs completely from the reasonableness and wisdom with which many members of that party are distinguished with.
Let’s recall. Vmro has organized referendums (failed ones) many times until now. And boycotted one of the key processes in the country, such as the Referendum on the Prespa Agreement in 2018, which enabled coming out of the isolation, protection of national interests and NATO membership.
Referendums that are not that
Let’s get things clear. When vmros organize a referendum, their goals are opposite of the meaning of referendum as such – broad civic decision. Hence, they organized 17 local referendums in 2017 against the refugees from the Middle East who, according to the vmros, are a “danger of Islamization”.
There were barely a few refugees in the country then. Their goal was to inflict fear, divisions and tensions among voters, in order for them to profit politically. Not to hear the voice of the people they swear by, but which serves them only as a number at elections and a source for enrichment.
They also organized a referendum against the Ohrid Framework Agreement, one day after they signed it, August 13, 2001. The agreement that stopped the bloodshed and ethnic conflict in the country. And based on which foundations the modern, multicultural, European Macedonian state is being built. Yes, they tried to organize a referendum even for that. Against their own signature.
At least ten more examples can be listed of how VMRO-DPMNE and their younger sister, the ultra-right Levica, have blocked and are still blocking democratic processes and national strategic interests. The motives are known and remain solely in the sphere of personal interests of a small number of people at the expense of the party, citizens and the state.
An anti-Macedonian, ultranationalist, anti-Western and pro-Russian installation
The call for a referendum made by VMRO-DPMNE (and those close to them) shows just how much of an anti-Macedonian, ultranationalist, anti-Western and pro-Russian installation they are. Nothing else. There is no other explanation. They have showed how they want to debate. With vuvuzelas. Only for them to talk and not listen to anyone. A time has come, a European one. That kind of political action is completely unacceptable.
The appetites for power are endless. They want rule, privileges, money, power and popularity even at the price of sending the whole country to hell. Let’s hope that the members of this party will keep the integrity and patriotic sentiment and they themselves will solve this issue. They have a good reason for that. North Macedonia now is already a part of a big and responsible European process, while the Macedonians have entered that process with a protected identity and language. I am convinced that this is clear to the true patriots also from all the other communities living in North Macedonia.
Europe – now!
It would be good on the highway to the EU to be driving on the fastest lane, instead of jiggling in vmro’s horse-driven carriage, on a side road that leads nowhere. More specifically, it leads to the abyss, to disintegration, chaos and violence in which they feel the best and profit the most. But that doesn’t work anymore. The time has come when it has become clear to everyone that we live in a new age. This is a time when only one call is valid for everyone equally, such as the one that could be heard loudly from Slovenia at the end of the 1980s: Europe – now!
