Inglorious swaggering of North Macedonia: Toxic!

By Margarita Grazhdani

Almost 20 years since its given status as a candidate country for accession to the European Union, North Macedonia continues its status quo, or even worse, putting itself, again, in a deadlock.

Officially, N. Macedonia once again proved how inclined it is to stagnate, to bring the vital processes for its democratization to regress, and even risking to undo them – whether those agreements on inter-ethnic relations or conflicts, bilateral ones at the regional level with disputes and open issues with neighboring countries, as well against all endeavors of the international community, towards which, it seems, there were only false claims and promises.

Official N.M. once again showed that it has neither learned the lessons of the past, nor it is likely to have an interest to learn and abide to carry out the recommendations for its European democratic future with maturity, commitment and precision.

On the contrary, the official N.M. has clearly entered a dead-end; I’m afraid, up to a deadlock.

Repeatedly, official N.M., with governments coming and going, with the perpetration of depraved and unreasonable nationalism, proves incompetence, immaturity, or lack of will, with contempt and dictation towards and for the aspirations of its citizens, those for decades they have nurtured and hoped for.

(Whereas, the experts on the spot could professionally elaborate economic and social issues such as depleted daily consume, no-subsidy to local productive businesses, high loans and debts, low pensions, and poor social assistance, as well as no assistance to students, and legal experts on the tensions and violence among students of different communities, fascist graffiti, corrupt judiciary – politically influenced courts (especially Constitutional, etc.).

Hence, once again as a dilettante, the official N.M. stood for disrespecting and devaluing efforts towards the normalization of interethnic relations in the country, bilateral issues, and commitments to the European community.

Its inglorious swaggering has become toxic to the core! Whereas its citizens remain divided through daily political agendas, instead of being agile and united towards major progresses and EU integrations.
