From Kharkiv’s Shadows to Global Recognition: Kseniya Halubovich Wins Female in Focus Award

Kseniya Halubovich, Belarusian photographer, journalist, and filmmaker, has been named among the 20 Single Image Winners of the prestigious “Female in Focus” award by The British Journal of Photography, for her powerful photograph taken in a hospice for displaced people in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Halubovich’s work captures the human cost of Russia’s war of aggression—focusing on vulnerability, dignity, and survival amid displacement. The award-winning image, created in one of Kharkiv’s shelters for internally displaced persons, stands as a stark visual testimony to the enduring impact of war on civilians.

A prolific visual storyteller, Halubovich has long documented human rights issues, mental health, and social crises across Eastern Europe. Since the Belarusian protests in 2020, she has produced multiple documentary films and reported for independent Belarusian and international media. Her ongoing work explores both the consequences of Russian aggression in Ukraine and the growing dependence of Belarus on Moscow.

Currently based between Poland and Ukraine, Halubovich continues to report from the region, often working in high-risk environments and focusing on underreported human stories from frontline and occupied areas.

Halubovich is also part of the Media Dialogue (Germany) team, contributing to international efforts in media, democracy, and cross-border cooperation. She was among the speakers at the Defending Democracy conference in Skopje (December 2024), organized by CIVIL – Center for Freedom, where she shared insights into documenting war, displacement, and repression.

Her recognition by The British Journal of Photography comes at a time when independent journalism and documentary photography remain essential tools in confronting disinformation and preserving the truth about the war.
