“The statement by Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK Vadym Prystaiko saying that Ukraine is allegedly prepared to consider abandoning its NATO membership aspirations in order to avert war with Russia was taken out of context and mislead many”, declared exclusively for CIVIL Media, spokesperson of Ukrainian MFA, Oleg Nikolenko.
“Ukraine’s position remains unchanged. In order to protect peace and lives of our citizens, Ukraine is ready to engage in any diplomatic formats with countries and international organizations. At the same time, the Ambassador correctly pointed out in his interview that the prospect of NATO membership is enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine. There can be no decisions which would contradict Ukraine’s Constitution. Ukraine’s NATO membership would undoubtedly be the best security guarantee for our country, but Ukraine is currently not a member of NATO or any other security alliance. Thus, the wider matter of security guarantees is critically important. Security threats are present here and now, making the search for such guarantees a fundamental and urgent task which the Ukrainian government is currently focused on”, said Nikolenko.
