Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/EFA Group Tineke Strik during an exchange of views with Portuguese Prime Minister has called for putting a pressure on Bulgaria to lift its veto on opening EU accession talks with North Macedonia, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports on Wednesday.
The EU enlargement and EU accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania have not been on the agenda during today’s plenary debate of the European Parliament with the Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.
Portugal will be presiding over the Council of the European Union from January 1 to June 30, 2021. Prime Minister, António Costa, presented Wednesday morning the priorities for the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the plenary session of the European Parliament, but he did not mention the EU enlargement.
MEP Tineke Strik, on the other hand, urged Costa to put pressure on Bulgaria.
“We imposed conditions that North Macedonia did everything to fulfill all, but one country blocks it. I urge you to put pressure on Bulgaria to lift its veto and restore the credibility of the EU in the Western Balkans,” Strik said.
