Minister of Transport and Communications Blagoj Bochvarski expects that a contractor for the first two sections of the railroad leading to Bulgaria will be selected in the first quarter of 2021, with Mden 1,8 billion (EUR 29,1 million) projected for this purpose.
“We will release the tender next year, for the Kumanovo-Beljakovce and Beljakovce-Kriva Palanka sections. Furthermore, we will resume with the maintenance of the Corridor X railway infrastructure,” Minister Bochvarski told reporters.
He said the the railroad towards Bulgaria is a complex project, with the three stages to cost approximately EUR 600 million.
“The second and third stages alone include 91 bridges and 32 tunnels, with the border crossing itself in a tunnel. It is a serious project worth about EUR 600 million. This is our priority in the coming period, primarily towards developing goodneighborly relations and infrastructure development,” noted Bochvarski.
According to him, the pan-European Corridor VIII is very important for the country and the EU.
“The European Union is giving serious contribution in the construction of this railroad, which is essential not only for passenger but also for cargo transport,” said Bochvarski.
