US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have agreed in principle to meet and discuss the Ukraine crisis, according to the Élysée Palace, news agency MIA informs.
French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the meeting on Europe’s security and the strategic stability to Putin and Biden in separate phone calls, the Élysée said in a statement, with both accepting the idea of the summit in principle.
Macron’s proposal would see the discussions be expanded to all stakeholders following the initial meeting.
The content of the summit was set to be decided by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday as part of pre-planned talks about the Ukraine crisis, according to the French presidency.
“The summit will not be held if Russia invades Ukraine,” the Élysée said.
