The Macedonian language and identity cannot be an obstacle for integration in an Union which cultural and linguistic diversity is a value that must be respected in accordance with the Lisbon Treaty. The Macedonian language cannot be an obstacle for goodneighborly relations based on mutual respect, said Deputy PM for European Affairs Nikola Dimitrov during a meeting with new Italian Ambassador Andrea Silvestri on Wednesday.
Deputy PM Dimitrov said the Government continues to invest efforts into reaching a dignified solution while respecting the self-determination right in line with the European principles, the Secretariat for European Affairs said in a press release.
“European integration should not be held hostage to bilateral issues. The Government’s key objective remains to europeanize the Macedonian society. Reforms will continue because the true goal of the accession process is in fact Europeanization and bringing European standards here. Any assistance from our friends will be welcome during this process,” said Dimitrov.
He wished Ambassador Silvestri success in the post and expressed hope that bilateral cooperation would enhance further.
Silvestri reaffirmed Italy’s strong support to North Macedonia’s European integration, reads the press release.
