The year 2025 reminded us of something simple — and uncomfortable. Democracy does not defend itself.
Across our societies, we have seen pressure on institutions, attacks on independent media, the normalisation of lies, and the quiet erosion of trust.
Another year of Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine unfolded behind us —
a year in which the aggressor, failing on the front lines, took revenge on civilians. And we witnessed immense suffering in Gaza, where another, almost livestreamed, genocide took place before the eyes of the world.
And the damage does not end with bombs and bodies. It seeps into societies, institutions, and minds. Not only through tanks and missiles — but through narratives, manipulation, fear, and fatigue.
At CIVIL, we spent 2025 doing what we have always done: monitoring power, exposing disinformation, defending human rights, standing with those targeted for telling the truth, and building alliances for democratic resilience — at home and across Europe.
We documented. We warned. We explained. We connected people who refuse to give up on freedom.
Here is the truth: Democracy can survive only if it is actively defended.
Not by institutions alone. Not by laws alone. But by people. By citizens who care. By journalists who refuse silence. By organisations that choose responsibility over comfort.
If you believe in truth, justice, democracy — help defend it.

This short video reflects on what 2025 revealed about democracy, truth, war, disinformation, and civic responsibility — and why democracy can survive only if it is actively defended.
It is a message from CIVIL — Center for Freedom, a civil society organisation working on democracy, human rights, media freedom, and countering disinformation in North Macedonia and across Europe.
