Bulgarian Prime Minister Stefan Yanev said during a joint press conference with Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev on Thursday that the two neighbors require constant communication and exchange of opinions.
“You won’t be surprised to find out that the focus of these talks is North Macedonia’s European perspective,” Yanev told reporters.
He added that Bulgaria’s policy remains unchanged.
Yanev, MIA reports from Sofia, expressed strong support for the EU accession of North Macedonia and Albania, but stressed that issues should be resolved first, to avoid bringing them into the EU.
“We’ve concluded that there’s currently a window of opportunity to work on unresolved issues, especially regarding the implementation of the Friendship Treaty. Our goal is to create an atmosphere of trust, friendship and open dialogue,” he said, adding that the Macedonian delegation arrived in Sofia with specific proposals, which will be discussed.
Politicians, Bulgarian PM Yanev noted, have a responsibility, underlining that historical commission members answer to the politicians that who have appointed them.
Moreover, Yanev said that political opportunities exist, but the first precondition is dialogue.
According to him, Bulgaria is doing everything in its power to find a solution, but noted that how and when this happens depends on different factors.
