Bulgaria has always been one of the countries that insisted the most on the European integration of the Republic of North Macedonia and other countries of the Western Balkans, says Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
“Bulgaria strongly supported the Republic of North Macedonia to enter NATO. We have always been extremely well-intentioned and clearly stated how far our compromises could go. We also established a mixed historical committee where experts had to resolve disputed issues solely with arguments. With Deputy Prime Ministers Zaharieva and Karakachanov we held dozens of meetings in search of solutions. We have done our best not to be the state that will say no to negotiating with the Republic of North Macedonia,” says PM Borissov in a Facebook post.
He adds that authorities in North Macedonia thought Bulgaria’s position could change with pressure and lobbying.
“Our position is not stubborn, but is principled and reflects the expectations of all Bulgarians. Of course, we are ready to continue the talks, we continue to follow the Good Neighbourhood Treaty. However, we expect to see the same commitment across the street,” says Borissov.
