Political analyst Florian Bieber, a good expert on Balkan circumstances, says Zaev’s resignation “has one good and two bad news”.
“The good news is that resigning without the need for it is a rare step of political courage and shows that taking political responsibility is possible. “The bad news is that the opposition is unconstructed, nationalistic and pro-Orban.”
Bieber also estimates that Zaev’s resignation is due to SDSM’s own mistakes. The reasons for this situation with Zaev’s resignation from the leading position of SDSM and the post of Prime Minister, are the stalemate in the reform process and the poorly conducted campaign, but also due to the failure of the European Union to deliver negotiations due to the Bulgarian blockade, Bieber wrote on Twitter.
According to him, there is also no clear successor to the position of Prime Minister and it is not known whether he will be able to create a “restart” of a serious reform process.
