On July 5, Russian forces launched two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at Ukraine’s Starokostiantyniv Air Base, a frequent target due to its strategic importance. The missiles were fired from MiG-31K jets and triggered nationwide air raid alerts—but caused no damage or casualties, according to local officials.
The Myth of the “Unstoppable” Kinzhal
Russia has long touted the Kinzhal missile as a Mach 10, “unstoppable” hypersonic weapon. However, since Ukraine began deploying U.S.-supplied Patriot air defense systems in 2023, the missile’s reputation has taken a hit.
Ukrainian air defense crews report that the missile’s actual speed appears lower than advertised, and its accuracy has been inconsistent. Multiple Kinzhal launches in recent months have either missed their targets or been intercepted mid-flight.
