In light of the persistent struggles of women, this day should be regarded as an occasion for protests advocating for the equality and equity of women, particularly in a world that remains predominantly patriarchal.
CIVIL – Center for Freedom, a human rights organization based in North Macedonia, joins the global call to end violence against women and girls and to eradicate exploitation and discrimination of any kind. This is not a day to celebrate, as women worldwide are still targeted by hate, discrimination, and violence. Rape remains a weapon of war, and femicide is on the rise. More women and girls killed in 2022 even as overall homicide numbers fall, says new research from UNODC and UN Women. That is unacceptable!
Populists and far right groups across the political spectrum continue to advocate for an abortion ban and treat women as reproductive objects, subordinating them to men.
Women around the world still struggle to be treated equally in every aspect of socioeconomic and political life. They are still fighting for equal pay, reproductive rights, the right to education, equal access to justice, and the opportunity to be trusted with decision-making roles and other essential needs.
Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day is commemorated worldwide in various ways and to varying degrees. Despite the diverse celebrations, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing challenges that women in our societies continue to face. In light of these persistent struggles, this day should be regarded as an occasion for protests advocating for the equality and equity of women, particularly in a world that remains predominantly patriarchal.
This year’s global theme is “Inspire Inclusion” (IWD). CIVIL supports this initiative by publicizing opinions and analyses on various aspects of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights on its media platform. The calls to action must be genuine and aimed at systemic and honest changes that will ensure true equality and equity for women, paving the way to reduce and ultimately eradicate violence and discrimination against women.
