The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen, expressed condolences for the death on the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli.
“Rest in peace, dear David,” she wrote in Italian on her Twitter account.
Ursula von der Layen stated that she was saddened by the heavy loss of “The great European and proud Italian”.
“David Sassoli was a compassionate journalist, a great president of the European Parliament and, above all, a dear friend.”
Early in the morning, top EU officials and members of the European Parliament, including EC Vice President Frans Timmermans, said goodbye to Sassoli via Twitter.
