The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, has died, his spokesman Roberto Quillo announced today on Twitter.

Sassoli, 65, died Jan. 11 at 01:15 a.m. in Italy, where he was hospitalized, his spokesman added.

Sassoli has been in hospital in Italy since December 26 for “serious complications” with his immune system, his office said.
