Bulgaria has the right to veto, but six months is too long of a period in the context in which the region finds itself in, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani, commenting the position of the new Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov.
He points out that decisions on EU enlargement are made by a consensus between the members, as well as that our position is principled and many countries of the Union support it.
– Six months is too long of a period in the context in which the region finds itself in. There are many open issues. I think that this period does not suit us. We need to sit down with Petkov and discuss what that period means. There should have been such an approach long time ago. The first intergovernmental conference is no different than the others. There is no need to keep the region hostage, said Osmani in the TV show 24 Analysis on TV 24.
“Financial Times” yesterday reported that the new Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov, is giving signals that Sofia will put an end to the obstructions for start of the EU negotiations with North Macedonia, after his government takes office.
– We are one hundred percent for NATO and EU policy. We will propose a new approach for North Macedonia and that should be made quickly, in a short period of time, no later than six months, stated Petkov in an interview for “Financial Times” on Monday before the voting in the Bulgarian Parliament for the new government, reported MIA.
