EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday to discuss the Western Balkans, namely the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Slovenian EU Presidency announced earlier that the Western Balkans is one of the topics of discussion at the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting that will be chaired by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. An unnamed senior EU official said EU ministers would discuss the document thoroughly and openly with Borrell, as they were not expected to reach any conclusions.
The document, drafted by representatives of the European External Action Service (EEAS), warns that the political situation in the Western Balkans is “full of growing challenges” in recent months, with a deepening political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina and tensions in northern Kosovo, as well as inter-party divisions in Montenegro that “paralyze the political system” in that country.
The meeting is also to be attended by the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, who will hold talks this week with the foreign ministers of Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the deputy prime minister of Kosovo.
