North Macedonia can very quickly become the energy hub on the Balkans by developing its energy sector, diversifying energy sources and creating alternative, eco-friendly sources of energy that will improve economic competitiveness, but also resolve once and for all the issue of energy pollution, Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Fatmir Bytyqi told Alsat TV.
He also stressed the importance of North Macedonia’s ownership role in the Alexandroupolis gas terminal, adding that it will create a new energy perspective for the country and an opportunity to substitute energy sources that are not eco-friendly.
“We need green, clean energy, whose production doesn’t depend on fuels that cause pollution, as well as to gradually decrease the use of polluting energy sources.
The Deputy PM also underlined the importance of Corridor 8 and rail connection with Bulgaria and Albania as cheap, alternative means of transport that will significantly improve the competitiveness of Macedonian businesses.
“Our future lies in developing human resources, improving transport infrastructure and establishing green energy sources. That’s the only way to create added value and ensure long-term sustainable development,” Bytyqi noted.
