The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has no indications for the time being over an increased influx of migrants, primarily because the so-called Western Balkans route is not operational. There is a rising number of illegal attempts to enter the country and the MoI is prepared for any challenge, said Minister of Interior Oliver Spasovski on Thursday.
Minister Spasovski was quizzed by reporters whether the relaxation of the restrictions in North Macedonia could contribute to a fresh migrant wave and illegal transport of migrants across the country.
“Since last September we have been conducting an operation that focuses exclusively on prevention of illegal migration and it has produced serious results. Only last week we had about 500 illegal attempts that have been rejected, i.e. illegal entry in the country was not allowed,” said Spasovski.
He recalled that police officers have been working alongside counterparts from the Visegrad Group, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia and others on the southern border since 2015, jointly protecting the country’s frontiers.
