Germany and Slovakia urged Friday the start of EU accession negotiations with both North Macedonia and Albania this June.
German Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth and Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok shared this position in response to the statement of Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, who told Euronews that the EU could begin negotiations only with Albania unless Skopje reaches a mutually acceptable solution with Sofia.
“Germany supports the EU Presidency’s objective to hold first accession conferences with both Albania and North Macedonia in June. Both countries have delivered on required reforms – now EU has to deliver, too. Further delay undermines EU credibility and stability in the region,” tweeted Roth.
FM Korcok believes that the Council should remove Bulgaria’s veto on North Macedonia.
“Credible EU enlargement policy is now about abandoning the veto in the Council which has to recognise progress made by North Macedonia and Albania. Opening of IGC with both countries long overdue,” tweeted Korcok.
