North Macedonia is a model candidate and let me clearly say that the negotiating frameworks for the first intergovernmental conference should be swiftly finalized during the Portuguese Presidency. Further delay will make us all losers. I honestly say that I have no understanding for Bulgaria’s blockade, said Austrian Minister for the EU and Constitution Karoline Edtstadler at a joint press conference with Deputy PM for European Affairs Nikola Dimitrov in Vienna on Thursday.
Minister Edtstadler said North Macedonia even changed its name to make further progress towards Europe, recalling that enormous efforts were invested during last year’s German Presidency to solve the Bulgarian impasse, but to no avail.
“This blockade remains on the top of the agenda in the Council and the foreign ministers’ format. I urge Bulgaria to end its resistance. We offered Vienna as a neutral place where talks could continue. This offer has not been accepted thus far, but let me stress that a vacuum occurs if this accession perspective is not realized with action,” added Edtstadler.
She noted that the vacuum could be filled by other countries that want to exercise influence such as China and Russia.
“We want to see the opposite in the Western Balkans and in North Macedonia. The Western Balkans belongs to Europe and EU will not be complete until the region is part of it,” said Edtstadler.
The Austrian Minister said Vienna would continue to provide its support to North Macedonia and the Western Balkans on the EU path.
“There are economic opportunities especially in North Macedonia, which is the main point, and that is why we are committed to the region. Our companies bring additional value in the area and here,” said Edtstadler.
On illegal migration, she said North Macedonia remains an important partner in the field and cooperation with the country is of pivotal importance, since 41,000 migrants transited North Macedonia only in 2020.
Deputy PM Dimitrov thanked Austria for its vocal, principled, friendly and continued support to the Balkans’ European future, based on the idea of solidarity as a unifying European value.
“Our road to the EU has been a thorny one. My friend, Foreign Minister Schallenberg once said while in Skopje, ‘It is like the Tour d’France, there are many stages and the road is long, but there are no dilemmas who should be standing at the race start’ and that is why we agreed today with Karoline that the start of this marathon and the race according to European principles and standards should no longer be delayed,” said Dimitrov.
He added it was time for North Macedonia to begin the accession process after 16 years as an EU candidate-country and 20 years within the stabilization and association process.
“We have done a lot but the green light of last March started to blink after the latest challenge from our eastern neighbor. It is very important for the Macedonian citizens, but also for the entire Balkans, to believe in Europe’s words and the Council decisions, to see a real breakthrough this year. We will do everything to ensure this by working on a solution to the bilateral issues but we should not let the accession process become hostage to bilateral issues, especially when these issues are not in line with the European values,” stressed Dimitrov.
Later in the day, Deputy PM Dimitrov is scheduled to meet with Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg.
The visit to Vienna is part of Dimitrov’s tour of EU capitals.
