Following his online meeting with Justice Minister Bojan Marichikj on Tuesday, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders has said that North Macedonia has to continue implementing justice system reforms, especially those regarding fundamental rights.
Reynders and Marichikj also discussed at Tuesday’s meeting fight against organized crime and corruption, reforms in intelligence agencies and public administration, key preconditions for opening the first EU negotiating chapters.
“Road to reforms is filled with challenges, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it’s crucial that authorities in North Macedonia retain the level of commitment to implementing reforms,” Reynders told MIA.
He added that the country has intensified efforts to implement rule of law reforms, stressing that independent judiciary and implementation of court decisions are crucial for ensuring efficiency of legal state.
The EU Justice Commissioner also commented the adoption of the Law on Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“This law ensures prosecution of crimes involving illegal wiretapping, however, additional efforts have to be made to improve fundamental fights. Implementation of reforms mustn’t slow down,” he said.
