The pandemic has produced new challenges for the judiciary, with new solutions sought so that the system continues to function, including hearings and proceedings before courts and prosecutor’s offices. Students, teaching staff and the education system have demonstrated that the system can function online, says Justice Minister Bojan Marichikj in a video address on occasion of the European Day of Justice.

“During the state of emergency, there were examples showing that judiciary can function online, which is good indicator that if needed, this could be used in practice in the future,” says Minister Marichikj.

According to him, it is very important that citizens are well-informed in a democratic society on how to realize their rights, how to receive protection and have equal and fair access to justice.

“The free legal aid guarantees that citizens in financial difficulties can get a lawyer and a fair trial, but also the right to receive information or advice on a certain legal matter,” adds Marichikj.

He notes that the pandemic also touches upon human rights and that we have to demonstrate unity, responsibility and care for the health workers as never before.
