Sterijovska: “A new era is coming for civic activism’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

“Decentralization of power is the first thing for which we, as citizens, have to fight for!”, said Irena Sterijovska, director and civic activist and participant in the Colorful Revolution, in her speech at the Conference “Society Without Borders”, which in organization of CIVIL-Center for Freedom was held yesterday at Hotel City Park in Skopje.

“What happened to us in the last 10 years ruined, literally, every healthy cell in society. And what we need to happen – is collective participation in the revitalization of society. The current managing team, relatively speaking, has to loosen the centralization of power. That was in our ideas, and also in the political program of the current Government. It cannot be done right away, but we should also not be buying time and leaving matters unresolved…A new era is coming for civic activists. We are already aware that if we offer certain concepts, if we fight for certain rights, for something that we consider we should enjoy, that we can realize them. However, we already need to be aware and innovative”, assessed Sterijovska.

“Perhaps, the real and logical definition of social justice is creating balance between the individual and society. And for it to function harmoniously. Currently, in Macedonia there is a post-culmination awakening, which needs to stay active and vigilant, not only for correcting what has already been done, but also for bringing innovative concepts”, considers civic activist Sterijovska.

“The key to what is called sustainable society, according to my opinion, both as an artist and a civic activist, is – a lecture that we the citizens need to learn about self-organizing, how everyone can improve their micro world, and by that society as well!”, said Sterijovska as a panelist at the conference “Society Without Borders”.

The statement is part of the project “Society Without Borders”, which CIVIL – Center for Freedom is implementing with the support of the German “Heinrich Bὅll” Foundation. The goal of the project is to promote and educate the citizens of Macedonia about the Citizen’s Charter, a global document for promoting civil rights and active participation of citizens in decision-making processes.
